Geron James sounds off on his return to receiver

Redshirt junior receiver Geron James is back on the practice field — and glad to be there.

After being kicked off the team following coach Chuck Amato’s last year at the helm two years ago for violating team rules, James sat out a year and went back home to Wilmington.

There he worked out in the weight room, Monday through Friday, with his own personal trainer. He made sure he stayed in shape, kept his muscle and tried to earn his way back on the team.

“I learned from my mistakes,” James said Friday. “Never dwell on the past, your future is what really matters. So I’m not going to dwell in the past.”

James has been back on the field since spring practices begun, and he’s taking reps alongside the receivers he left just two years ago.

“I feel a lot better and my spirits are back up,” James said. “I just love being out here with my teammates.”

Sitting out a year was very difficult for James, he said. But while watching his team play, he learned a lot about himself.

“It makes you think about a lot of decisions I made back in the past,” James said. “Sitting down, watching the team you get more motivated to come back and to be with your teammates.”

But with a deep group of receivers, James is hoping that coach Tom O’Brien can find a spot for him on the field. James says there are enough open spots for him on the team to find some playing time. One would think so, for a guy who led his team to a win over Florida State with his performance two years ago: four catches for 91 yards and a touchdown.

“We’re getting a good look at him now. Obviously he’s big and powerful,” O’Brien said. “He’s got a lot to learn. Hopefully he can work his way into the equation. He’s definitely a guy that can help us with his athletic ability.”
