QB battle whittles to 3

Coach Tom O’Brien announced Tuesday after practice that the battle for the starting quarterback job has been cut to three: redshirt senior Daniel Evans, redshirt freshman Russell Wilson and true freshman Mike Glennon.

The announcement wasn’t exactly surprising. The other two quarterbacks — redshirt junior Harrison Beck and redshirt sophomore Justin Burke — didn’t receive any snaps in the Pack’s second scrimmage and were thought by most to be the two with the longest shot at grabbing the starting job.

It was easy to see in spring practices, with Evans sitting out and Glennon yet to join the team, that Wilson had the most dynamic arm, whizzing passes through the secondary into the receivers hands. His mobility could add a new dimension to State’s offense.

Glennon is, by all accounts, impressing both the coaching staff and his fellow players in preseason practices. A number of players have commented on his strong arm and his ability to move around the pocket and escape if need be. With the hype surrounding his signing, O’Brien is sure to give the newbie a fair shot.

But it could be tough for either to beat out Evans. The returning starter tore his shoulder muscle last season, surely affecting his play in the dismal season-ending loss to Maryland. Evans played efficiently in games prior to his injury and has posted the best results in the preseason scrimmage. One would think O’Brien should be leaning towards the more experienced Evans, rather than throwing a newbie in to start in a hostile SEC environment.
