SEC tailgating experience

SC tailgater

I’ve always heard that SEC tailgate scenes are like no other in the country. With all the hype, I figured I had to test the theory.

Like N.C. State, South Carolina’s tailgating area sits in a fairground right next to the off-campus stadium. And while the size of the total tailgating area is similar to State’s, what sets South Carolina apart is the duration of their party.

“We got three days,” avid tailgater and South Carolina fan Patrick McKelkeen said. “We have three whole meals a day, all cooked out here. This place is usually packed to the brim starting on Friday and into Sunday afternoon.”

The Thursday night kickoff made it difficult for some to be out for the three-day limit. But McKelkeen was one of many who came out Wednesday night and plans to stay through Friday.

The more wild tailgating takes place in the lot across from the RVs, which opens up five hours prior to kickoff.

“Here it’s a little more laid back and chilled out, but you go out there and it’s crazy,” McKelkeen said. “That’s where the idiots are.”

McKelkeen was one of many who at 3 p.m., promptly left his RV, and headed for the other lot.
