Football spring practice observations

Though the team has yet to put their pads on, N.C. State’s football team was out Tuesday on the practice field adjacent to Carter-Finley Stadium for the first of its 15 spring practices. The most heated battle that Wolfpack fans will be keeping an eye on is the battle for the quarterback position.

Hyped true freshman quarterback Mike Glennon, the No. 5 rated quarterback nationally on Scout.com, was on hand Tuesday for the practice, but wore only gray warmup pants and a longsleeve black shirt. He kept a close watch on the quarterbacks that did practice Tuesday — junior Harrison Beck, sophomore Justin Burke and promising freshman Russell Wilson — and hung with the crew throughout the drills. Last year’s starting quarterback, Daniel Evans, is out for spring practices due to his recovery from shoulder surgery that he underwent after the season.

Fans have been talking about Wilson, along with Glennon, since last season. The coaching staff decided to redshirt Wilson, who also plays for the baseball team, last season. So the media got their first real look at Wilson today at practice — and he didn’t disappoint. Wilson was easily the best looking quarterback at practice between him, Beck and Burke. His passes were crisp and accurate and his arm far out blasted Beck’s and Burke’s. But time will only tell what the coaches see in him compared to the other quarterbacks, especially once Glennon gets to throwing over the summer.

Wilson said himself he’s only 5′11, but based on the success of Missouri’s Chase Daniel and Kansas’ Todd Reesing, the height may not be a hindrance. But he may be forced to choose between baseball and football if the opportunity arises.

Adjustments are also being made on the defensive front. Check back on this blog on Thursday for a defensive update.
