Football scrimmage - April 12
The football team fought through wet conditions Saturday in the team’s last scrimmage before next weekend’s Red and White game.
At the quarterback position, Russell Wilson separated himself statistically from the rest of the quarterbacks, throwing for 172 yards completing 14 of 21 passes.
Harrison Beck went 4-for-15 with 45 yards while Justin Burke threw 5-for-9 for 25 yards. And though the numbers look uneven — as they have for most of the spring — coach Tom O’Brien is not tipping his hand.
“There’s been no decision made on the quarterback situation,” O’Brien said. “We’re still evaluating and we’ll be doing it right up until we’re ready to play South Carolina.”
With returning starter Daniel Evans still hurt and freshman Mike Glennon not practicing until the summer, Wilson will have more opportunity to shine above the rest.
With only a week left in spring practices, O’Brien said he is stressing individual improvement and making his team tougher — an element he labeled as a major weakness last season.
And though he still sees plenty of room for improvement in some technical aspects, O’Brien is liking his team’s intensity.
“Dropped a few balls on offense and defense, I think two or three interceptions,” O’Brien said. “But there’s some intensity out there and that’s the best thing right now.”
The other statistical leaders for the day included Jamelle Eugene’s rushing total of 18 carries for 42 yards, Donald Bowens’ 5 receptions for 79 yards, and highly-touted freshman linebacker Dwayne Maddox’s eight tackles, including one sack.
